our story

Founded in 2008 by Yusuf Patel, Muslim Family Initiative (formerly SREIslamic) was established to address the growing confusion among parents regarding sex education in schools.

Many Muslim parents were unsure of their rights within the educational system and felt unprepared to raise their children in a society increasingly influenced by hypersexualised messaging.

Our mission is to support Muslim parents in taking positive action against inappropriate sex education in schools. We aim to empower their children to understand and uphold Islamic values concerning sex, relationships, and ‘LGBTQ’ identities.

In 2024, SREIslamic rebranded as Muslim Family Initiative to better reflect our expanded goals of supporting Muslim families in navigating sex education both in schools and at home.

Sixteen years later we have extended our impact by publishing research, training up over 200 RSE Champions and developing guidance and resources to support parents navigate these complex challenges.
