Our story

From SREIslamic to Muslim Family Initiative

Yusuf Patel founded SREIslamic in 2008 to answer the growing confusion among parents about sex education in schools. Many Muslim parents were unsure of their rights and felt unprepared to raise children in a society shaped by hypersexualised messaging. Over the years we published research, trained more than 200 RSE Champions and developed guidance that has become the first point of call on RSE for Muslim communities. In 2024 we became Muslim Family Initiative, to reflect a wider purpose: supporting families at home as well as in schools. Today that includes parenting toolkits, a maktab curriculum, training for maktab teachers and programmes for parents and children.
Our founder

Yusuf Patel

Founder and Managing Director Yusuf has worked with Muslim families since founding the organisation in 2008. He writes our parent toolkits, develops our curricula and delivers workshops for parents, teachers and community leaders. Before leading MFI full time he worked for a number of mental health, homelessness and support charities.
