Maktab teacher training

Helping maktab teachers respond with confidence

A two-hour session for maktab and madrassa teachers, imams and managers on responding to the ‘LGBTQ’ narratives children bring into the classroom from school, social media and friends. 2 hours · In person, or online on request
Why it matters

Children are bringing these questions into the maktab

Makaatib are where most Muslim children are, and they are trusted spaces where children can speak openly. But few teachers have been prepared for the questions children now ask, or for how to answer them in a way that is clear, caring and grounded in Islam.
Real scenario 1

A pupil who identifies as ‘lesbian’

A quiet 12-year-old tells her classmates she is a ‘lesbian’. They distance themselves, she sits alone, and a fiqh lesson leaves her surprised by what Islam teaches.
Real scenario 2

A practising girl who defends ‘LGBTQ+’

A student who prays, fasts and dresses modestly challenges her teacher, saying it is wrong to be homophobic. The teacher is caught off guard and the class ends.
Real scenario 3

A classroom activity at school

A Year 6 boy describes a lesson where pupils had to stand on the side of the room marked ‘same-sex relationships are okay’ or ‘not okay’.
Each scenario is based on a real situation from a madrassa in the UK. Teachers work through them at the start of the session and revisit them at the end.
What the session covers

Practical, honest and rooted in Islam

01

Real scenarios

Work through real situations from UK madaaris and think through how you would respond.
02

Why children are vulnerable

Islam held as a label rather than a conviction, a search for love that is missing at home, and an avalanche of ideological messages.
03

A proactive response

Building foundational strength, emotional security and worldview clarity in the children you teach.
04

The messages children hear

Understanding narratives such as ‘love is love’ and ‘born this way’, and the messages children should be hearing instead.
05

Legal, logistical, linguistic

What you are allowed to say, whether the maktab is the right place, and how to say it correctly.
06

The Islamic behaviour model

Desires do not define who you are, behaviour can be controlled, and the door of tawbah is always open.
